IIHF Integrity Week – together for safe ice hockey

From 19 to 23 January, the IIHF declared Integrity Week and used its channels to highlight this important issue. The ÖEHV is also unequivocally committed to integrity, fairness and ethical conduct in ice hockey. To this end, a guide has been developed for everyone involved in Austrian ice hockey, serving as guidance for day-to-day actions at club or federation level.

The aim is to raise awareness of responsible conduct and ensure that the ethical principles and values of the ÖEHV, as well as those of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), are upheld. Compliance with applicable Austrian laws and sport-related regulations also forms the basis of this guide.

“Integrity” is an important buzzword that is becoming increasingly significant in the world of sport. At the ÖEHV, the area of integrity is known as “ÖEHV Integrity”. But what does integrity actually mean, and how can we ensure that the highest standards of integrity are met and upheld in Austrian ice hockey?

Integrity means that everyone involved in ice hockey adheres to ethical and moral standards. This includes, in particular, fairness, respect, transparency and consistent compliance with rules and regulations. Integrity is the foundation for credible, responsible and clean sport. It protects trust in our sport and helps create a safe, fair and inclusive environment for everyone involved.

Central to this is the commitment to prevent misconduct, discrimination, manipulation, violence and every form of unethical behaviour. Only if sporting competition is conducted honestly and the welfare of everyone involved – particularly that of the athletes – is respected can the values of ice hockey be preserved and developed in the long term.

The 4 areas of ÖEHV Integrity are:

  • Anti-doping
  • Competition manipulation
  • Violence and abuse
  • Ethics

The Austrian Ice Hockey Association sees itself as a responsible and integrity-conscious national sports federation that is actively committed to promoting openness and transparency, and to protecting everyone involved in Austrian ice hockey. The ÖEHV places great importance on creating a respectful and safe environment in which all stakeholders, regardless of their role in ice hockey, can work together in a fair and trusting atmosphere.

To ensure this environment, the ÖEHV takes a proactive approach that encompasses both prevention and education. In order to identify, prevent and, where necessary, consistently sanction misconduct from either internal or external sources at an early stage, the ÖEHV works closely with trusted national and international partners. This includes specialist organisations, public institutions and specialised bodies whose knowledge and expertise make a decisive contribution to achieving these aims.
