How the sport works
Para ice hockey in detail
Sledges & sticks
The game is played in specially adapted sledges. Instead of one long stick, players use two short sticks: one end has spikes for propulsion, the other a blade for playing the puck.
Game format
Five skaters plus a goaltender per team compete on a regular ice rink. A game consists of three 15-minute periods – with full protective equipment; goaltenders wear additional gear.
Who is it for?
Para ice hockey is aimed at athletes who cannot play stand-up ice hockey due to an impairment of the lower extremities – for example amputation, muscle weakness, paralysis, joint stiffness or legs of different lengths.
