From C to A licence
The ÖEHV coaching education leads in three stages from the basics to the highest state-recognised qualification.
CInstructor (C licence)
The first stage: planned and run by the regional federations, with curriculum requirements set by the ÖEHV.
BInstructor (B licence)
The first state-recognised education, together with the Federal Sports Academy Vienna. Passing it qualifies you for the A licence.
ACoach (A licence)
After completing the B licence and a further year of practice: the state education with the BSPA Vienna — currently the highest ÖEHV qualification.

What each stage involves
CInstructor (C licence)
Two modules, run by the umbrella and regional federations
The C licence education has been standardised across Austria by Sport Austria (BSO) and the three umbrella sports federations ASKÖ, ASVÖ and SPORTUNION. The theoretical and practical-methodical education is split into two modules, the first of which is the foundation for all specialist modules.
In addition, a four-hour first aid course is required; Sport Austria offers these free of charge. The certificate is issued only after both the basic and the specialist module have been completed. With this certificate and the other required documents, the coaching ID card can be applied for at the ÖEHV.
Information and course announcements are published on the websites of the regional federations. A completed C licence plus practical experience is a prerequisite for the instructor education.
Module 1 — basic module
- organised and run by one of the three umbrella sports federations
- sport-independent content
- 21 teaching units of 45 minutes
- multiple-choice exam (one unit, 45 minutes)
Module 2 — specialist module
- organised and run by the regional federations in coordination with the ÖEHV
- ice hockey specific content
- at least 25 teaching units
- practical teaching demonstration as the exam
BInstructor (B licence)
First state-recognised education, together with the BSPA Vienna
The instructor course is the first state-recognised education the ÖEHV runs in cooperation with the Federal Sports Academy Vienna. It stands out for its practical relevance in the athletic domain; the theoretical content is strongly topic-centred and closely tied to practice.
Successfully completing the instructor education qualifies you to start the state coaching education (A licence).

ACoach (A licence)
Three semesters, the highest ÖEHV qualification
After passing the instructor education and a further year of practice, the coaching course can begin. Like the instructor course it is a state-recognised education, run in cooperation with the Federal Sports Academy Vienna.
The education spans three semesters: the first two are completed with the Federal Sports Academy Vienna, comprising 110 and 115 units respectively. The third semester is a specialist course developed by the ÖEHV, comprising around 100 units.

- greater standing for the profession of ice hockey coach in Austria
- greater standing for Austrian coaches abroad
- a stronger image for the Austrian national teams
