YOG: Austria’s U16 lose 3:9 to Latvia

Austria’s young players suffered their first defeat at the Youth Olympic Games in Gangwon (KOR). After celebrating a narrow 4:3 win over Spain in the morning, they had to concede a 3:9 defeat to Latvia in the afternoon. Head Coach Florian Mühlstein’s team now stands at four wins and one loss. On Tuesday, they will face Denmark and Poland in the 3x3 format.

It was a day marked above all by numerous penalties. Against Spain, they played shorthanded almost throughout, as Florian Mühlstein noted, while Spain’s netminder was also in excellent form that day. Nevertheless, Austria repeatedly got the puck in front of the opposition goal and deservedly came away with a 4:3 win.

They also took numerous penalties against Latvia and were frequently shorthanded. And that was punished ruthlessly. “We always felt one step slower, which was also down to the quality of the opposition. Being shorthanded almost throughout makes it twice as difficult against such a strong nation. Everything has to come together to be able to come away with a win,” said Florian Mühlstein.

The action continues immediately for his team. Denmark and Poland await on Tuesday.
