YOG: Austria reach the semi-finals

With five wins and two defeats in the group stage of the 3x3 tournament at the Youth Olympic Games 2024 in Gangwon (KOR), Austria’s U16 national team have reached the semi-finals. They will face Denmark tomorrow, Wednesday.

Austria beat the Danes 7:5 on Tuesday morning, meaning they head into the semi-finals with a positive feeling, even though they lost their final group-stage game against Poland 2:3.

"That was our best game of the tournament so far," reflected Head Coach Florian Mühlstein after the win over Denmark. From the outset, the team implemented the coaching staff’s instructions precisely, played actively with the puck and communicated a great deal among themselves. The only issue that has run like a thread through the tournament for the Austrians is penalty shots. "That has to stop if we want to go far," Mühlstein was also critical of this aspect.

The 2:3 defeat against Poland in the final group game was somewhat bitter. Austria controlled the game for the full 45 minutes and hit the post countless times. In the final shift, Austria took a penalty and Poland converted the resulting penalty shot to win 3:2. "Shake it off and straighten the crown," said Florian Mühlstein sportingly.

Austria will now face Denmark in the semi-finals tomorrow, Wednesday. Latvia and Kazakhstan will contest the other semi-final.
