Wörthersee Trophy: Austria beat Switzer­land 2:0

Disciplined, structured and driving towards goal. That is how Austria’s recipe for success can be summed up. They not only had a clear advantage in scoring chances in all three periods, but also controlled the puck and their opponents for the most part.

The 1:0 by PWHL-based Anna Meixner, set up by Austria’s second North American export Theresa Schafzahl midway through the second period, was almost overdue by then. Switzerland pulled their goaltender in the closing minutes. Charlotte Wittich took advantage to seal the win with 43 seconds remaining.

Head Coach Alexander Bröms: “We had a lot of puck possession. We should have made better use of that, brought more pucks to the net and generally created more traffic in front of the opposition goal. But that also shows us what we need to work on for tomorrow’s game against Denmark. We are expecting a very different opponent. I expect a much more physical game, in which we will need to be aggressive in our own zone and transition quickly. We also need to be more clinical with our chances.”

Admission for Austria’s games is € 10, while entry to all other matches is free.
