World Cham­pi­onship warm-up: Austria suffer away defeat to Hungary

After a somewhat subdued first period, in which Hungary used their first power play to take a 1:0 lead and a Luca Erne goal shortly before the break was disallowed following a video review, Austria stepped up a gear.

They created significantly more chances than the hosts but simply could not get the puck into the net. They registered 28:10 shots on goal across the second and third periods combined. Ramon Schnetzer finally broke the deadlock in the 34th minute, with Austria already 0:2 behind. Hungary, who fielded their World Championship team apart from Janos Hari, took advantage of a two-man advantage (44.) to restore their two-goal lead. Shortly afterwards, Paul Huber (46.) pulled Austria back to 2:3, before Roland Kiss scored to make it 4:2 in the 50th minute.

Austria won the subsequent penalty shoot-out, which was held for training purposes, 2:0.

Head Coach Roger Bader: “In my view, this was an undeserved defeat. From the 21st minute onwards, we were clearly the better team and pinned Hungary back in their own end at 6:5 towards the end of the game. Two goals were somewhat strange, as the puck was taken out of the air. We deserved to win today. We want to hear our national anthem tomorrow and will do everything we can to make that happen.”
