World Cham­pi­onship prepa­ra­tions: Austria closing in on World Cham­pi­onship squad

On Wednesday afternoon, Head Coach Roger Bader will take to the ice for the first time with an almost complete squad, with only Vinzenz Rohrer still absent in Switzerland and Peter Schneider missing. On Sunday at 19:00, live on ORF SPORT +, they will face world champions Canada at the sold-out Steffl Arena in Vienna.

“We have made clear progress over the past two weeks,” says Roger Bader is pleased with his team’s performances against Czechia and Germany. Against the World Championship runners-up, they secured their first win of the World Championship preparations last Saturday. On Wednesday, the players who were sidelined by illness last week will join the national team. Marco Rossi will also pull on the red-white-red training shirt for the first time on Wednesday.

New to the squad: Thomas Raffl, Marco Rossi, Mario Huber, Benjamin Nissner and Ali Wukovits. Vinzenz Rohrer will play the decisive game of the Best-of-seven series against Lausanne for the Swiss championship title with the ZSC Lions on Tuesday evening and is expected to join the team camp on Friday. Peter Schneider will miss the start due to illness.

David Reinbacher is out through injury and will also not be available for the World Championship. Marco Kasper is in the AHL play-offs with the Grand Rapids Griffins and will only become an option should he be eliminated early.

“By Wednesday, we will be very close to our World Championship squad. As in every week, the new players need to be integrated quickly. At the start, that always means taking a small step back as well,” said Roger Bader, who will have to do without Johannes Bischofberger for family reasons.
