World Championship preparation week #2: Head Coach Roger Bader expands squad to 27 players
Immediately after the end of the first team camp in preparation for the 2024 World Championship, Head Coach Roger Bader provided an initial insight into the squad for the coming week. It will be expanded to 27 players. Dominic Zwerger, Benjamin Baumgartner, Henrik Neubauer, Nico Brunner and Philipp Wimmer are new additions. The next two warm-up matches are scheduled for Thursday and Friday. Austria will first face Slovenia away in Ljubljana on 11 April, before hosting the Division IA nation in Villach on 12 April.

Compared to the first week, two additional players will join the camp in Villach. “A few players were carrying knocks towards the end of the first preparation camp, so we decided to expand the squad,” explains Head Coach Roger Bader. The five new additions – Zwerger, Baumgartner, Neubauer, Brunner and Wimmer – also bring 197 international appearances, 22 goals and 39 assists worth of experience.
“The anticipation of joining the national team is great. As last year, we want to prepare well for the World Championship and finish the campaign on a positive note by staying in the top division,” explains Dominic Zwerger. Benjamin Baumgartner is particularly hoping to remain injury-free this year: “Now it is a matter of settling in well and playing two good warm-up matches.”
Gregor Biber, who made a good impression in Latvia, will begin preparing for the U18 National Team’s Division IA World Championship, 14–20 April in Frederikshavn (DEN), next week, where they will face Germany, Denmark, Japan, Hungary and Ukraine. The full schedule is available HERE. Lukas Bär and Armin Preiser are no longer in the squad for the time being.
Last Friday, Dominique Heinrich joined a highly exclusive club. In the second warm-up match against Latvia, which Austria lost 2:3 in a penalty shootout, as they had the previous day, the defenceman made his 100th international appearance. Taking last year’s World Championship squad as a reference point, only Manuel Ganahl (137), Thomas Raffl (125) and Lukas Haudum (100) among the active players also belong to this club. “It was a very special moment and I am delighted that I was able to celebrate it with the boys during the game. Even though we were unable to win, both internationals were extremely positive,” and “Henke” will remember this evening in a special way.
Things continue in Villach from Monday, with six training sessions and two further warm-up matches on the schedule. There is great anticipation in Villach ahead of the national team’s appearance, says Mayor Günther Albel: “The international match is a fine conclusion to this year’s ice hockey season in Villach. Three titles and two runners-up finishes in the youth leagues demonstrate the importance and future of this sport in our city. The major infrastructure measures now being implemented are also fitting: the refurbishment of our ice rink will begin immediately after the Slovenia match. Two million euros will be invested by August. Construction of the second ice surface will then begin next year. It will also house Austria’s first Federal Performance Centre for women.”
