Women’s World Championship Division IA: Austria to field strongest possible line-up
Austria’s women’s national ice hockey team will begin its preparations for the World Championship Division IA on 4 April. The two PWHL-based players Anna Meixner and Theresa Schafzahl will already take to the ice in St. Pölten, while Head Coach Alexander Bröms can otherwise also draw on a full complement of players. They will play a friendly against Slovakia on Sunday before travelling to Shenzhen (CHN) for the World Championship. There, they will face Denmark, China, Slovakia, the Netherlands and France from 13 April.

“We have three really good goaltenders, a strong defensive core and a good mix in attack. I think we have found a really strong squad for the World Championship,” says Head Coach Alexander Bröms as he looks at the roster.
In recent years, they have come close to promotion to the top division. Sometimes they were a point or even just a goal short, while at other times the puck did not bounce Austria’s way. They at least left the Olympic qualifying tournament last February with a good feeling following the 8:2 win over Slovakia, as well as the ambition to improve at the World Championship, promised Anna Meixner in Bremerhaven (GER): “We will work on the little things we need to do better until the World Championship.”
They will face their neighbours in Bratislava (SVK) for their first friendly on 6 April, before also taking on France in Shenzhen on 10 April, ahead of their opening points game against Denmark on 13 April.
“The team now has to grow together and perform, play and act as a unit. The results against Slovakia and France are not the priority. Naturally, we want to put in two good performances and deliver a solid display on the ice. First and foremost, we want to show a good team performance. It is never about individual players, it is always about the team,” says Bröms outlining expectations for the two matches.
The Swede will already be able to call upon his entire squad for these matches, including Anna Meixner and Theresa Schafzahl.
