Women’s World Cham­pi­onship Divi­sion IA: Austria over­turn Hungary after trailing 0:2 in the penalty shoot-out

Following the win over Hungary, there is still a chance of bronze. To achieve that, Austria must beat the Netherlands after 60 minutes on Saturday and need help from France, who are battling Hungary for promotion in their head-to-head encounter. Norway can also secure promotion with a win over South Korea.

“Coming into the dressing room with this feeling after every game must be our goal for the future,” said Anna Meixner to her teammates in her dressing-room address. They will certainly want to take that feeling with them once more against the Netherlands.

For now, however, it is time to enjoy the moment, as they matched Hungary’s high tempo and were able to rely on Magdalena Luggin in goal, although she had to pick the puck out of her net for the first time while shorthanded in the third minute and again after six minutes of play.

From then on, she positively frustrated the Hungarians, who dictated play in the first period. Shortly before the end, however, Austria struck twice. Annika Fazokas first pulled one back, before Lena Artner equalised just 25 seconds later.

After two scoreless periods, in which Austria created several good chances but also remained in the game thanks to some big saves by Luggin at the other end, Austria were unlucky in overtime with a shot off the post and another off the crossbar. But after Anja Trummer and Anna Meixner scored in the penalty shoot-out, the Austrian national anthem was heard at the end after all.

Head Coach Alexander Bröms: “We had a poor start to the game, but fought back incredibly. I am very proud of the team and of the fact that they were still strong enough at the end to win the game. I think it is a good experience for the players that the game was so close and tough.”

Magdalena Luggin: “It’s incredible that we came back like that after conceding those two goals. I’m so proud of the girls that we saw it through to the end. Nobody sat back; everyone went full throttle. Conceding from the first shot was tough, but I knew we have such good players and at some point you simply get into the flow.”
