Women’s World Cham­pi­onship: Austria cele­brate a second win in their second game against China

47:11 shots – that statistic speaks volumes. China were still well served by the 3:0 result, as the margin of victory could certainly have been greater. Austria were somewhat tentative, particularly in the first period. Anna Meixner’s opening goal in the 9th minute did not initially provide the expected breakthrough either. That came after the first intermission. Austria looked more aggressive straight from the opening face-off, driving harder towards goal. They began to pin China back for spells. 

Austria registered 20 shots on goal in the middle period, and Anja Trummer’s effort also found its way into the net as Emma Lintner deflected it in for 2:0 in the 28th minute. While they were unable to extend their lead further, nobody doubted an Austrian victory after 40 minutes. They did not let up in the final period either, capitalising on a power play in the 48th minute as Annika Fazokas made it 3:0. That sealed the victory. 

After two matchdays, Austria are level on points with Slovakia at the top of the table. The two leaders meet head-to-head on Wednesday, live on ORF SPORT + from 07:00.

Anja Trummer, Best Player: "From the second period onwards, we really stepped it up and maintained that until the end. Overall, it was a very solid, very consistent performance that we can build on. It is always good to beat the home team. Every win counts and is worth the same. But it gives us confidence for the next game. For Wednesday, we need to forget that we won the first two games and simply go again with full commitment and all our heart. Then I am confident."
