Women’s and Men’s World Cham­pi­onships live on ORF

“For decades, ORF and our national ice hockey teams in the women’s, men’s and para divisions have formed a close partnership. The Austrian national teams are at home with Austria’s biggest TV broadcaster and media outlet, and I am pleased that this will continue to be the case. Our home Women’s World Championship is a major opportunity, both from a sporting perspective and for women’s ice hockey in general. It was essential for us to broadcast it on Austria’s TV channel with the widest reach. The same applies to the men’s warm-up games and the World Championship itself. We hope that our national teams can trigger a wave of enthusiasm in April and May and that we can further increase the visibility of our unique sport,” explains ÖEHV President Klaus Hartmann.

“ORF for everyone is also ORF for all ice hockey fans and, of course, for all players, whether it is the men at the top-level World Championship or the women – hopefully on their way there – at the home World Championship,” said ORF Head of Sport Hannes Aigelsreiter. “ORF’s broadcasts of women’s football matches have given the sport a lasting boost, and we hope for the same for women’s ice hockey. We are looking forward to great sport.”

From 21 to 27 April, Klagenfurt will host the 2024 IIHF Ice Hockey Women´s World Championship Division IA. Austria will face Hungary, France, Norway, the Netherlands and South Korea for promotion to the Top Division. Following 2009 and 2017, it is the third Women’s World Championship on Austrian ice. Head Coach Alexander Bröms can call on an almost full-strength squad. Theresa Schafzahl, a professional in North America’s PWHL, has been released by her club Boston for the World Championship, while Anna Meixner is still working on her comeback but is determined to take to the ice.

Men on the way to becoming an established top-division nation

“If you have avoided relegation three times in a row, you can call yourself a top-division nation,” stresses Head Coach Roger Bader to this day. In Prague, the Austrian players will have the opportunity to achieve exactly that in May. With Denmark, Switzerland, Canada, Finland, Czechia, Norway and Great Britain, they have been drawn in the nominally tougher group.

“Two years ago in Tampere, we were also in the nominally tougher group and performed exceptionally well,” the names do not give the head coach any headaches, especially as it is not something they can choose anyway.

Whether they will receive reinforcements from North America remains to be seen. Marco Rossi, Marco Kasper and David Reinbacher have all stated that they are willing to play for Austria, subject to agreement with their respective clubs and, naturally, provided that their seasons have already ended.

On the road to the World Championship, Roger Bader has once again succeeded in putting together a high-calibre warm-up programme featuring games against all the medal winners from the 2023 World Championship. The major highlight is the final test against world champions Canada on 5 May at the Steffl Arena in Vienna.

As part of the World Championship preparations, ORF will broadcast the two games against Czechia on 18 and 20 April, as well as the home games against Germany on 27 April and Canada on 5 May, live.

The World Championship opener against Denmark on 11 May at 16:20 will be shown live on ORF 1, with all other World Championship games on ORF SPORT +. ORF will broadcast a total of 15 World Championship games, including all Austria games, the quarter-final and semi-final deciders, the 3rd-place play-off and the final.
