Women lose to Denmark 1:2 after a hard-fought battle

“We were not quite able to keep up with Denmark in the first period and did not make the most of our potential either. That was much better in the second period. We increasingly took control, created good chances, but it was the Danes who scored. We had good spells, but unfortunately it was not enough in the end,” reflected Head Coach Alexander Bröms.

The ÖEHV team registered 34:19 shots on goal, but too few of them were truly dangerous. Denmark did that better overall, working the puck until they created a clear-cut chance and making it count.

Selma Luggin was beaten for the first time in the 29th minute of the middle period. Austria were shorthanded following a penalty against Annika Fazokas, which Julie Oksbjerg converted to give Denmark the lead. Six minutes later, Silke Glud made it 2:0.

But Theresa Schafzahl responded shortly afterwards, sending the fans and the bench into celebration. Assisted by Anna Meixner, she reduced the deficit to 1:2. Austria searched for opportunities in the final period and repeatedly tested Denmark's Caroline Bjergstad, but she allowed nothing more.

Austria's placement game follows on Sunday, with the opponent still to be confirmed.
