With World Championship experience and emerging talent into the Austria Cup
Head Coach Roger Bader has called up 26 players for next week's Austria Cup in Klagenfurt. The squad consists of half World Championship-experienced players and half emerging players. The Austria Cup will be held in a semi-final/final format on 14 and 15 December. Austria will play their first match against Hungary on 14 December at 19:00, before facing either the winner or loser of Italy vs. Poland on Friday at 17:00, depending on the outcome of the match.

The squad includes one debutant: Tobias Sablattnig. “He has drawn attention with strong performances for KAC. He has earned this opportunity,” said Head Coach Roger Bader about the 20-year-old, who has recorded three goals and two assists so far in the current win2day ICE Hockey League season.
Among the other names are numerous players who have already taken to the ice at an IIHF World Championship, as well as players currently making a case for themselves. In goal, Kickert and Madlener, who wore the national team jersey at the World Championship in Tampere (FIN) last May, are both in Klagenfurt. Wraneschitz and Zimmermann are two young, emerging goaltenders who have also been called up.
The roster also includes five Swiss-based players in Wolf, Schnetzer, Zündel, Achermann and Baumgartner, with the squad boasting a combined 879 international appearances of experience.
Head Coach Roger Bader: “It is the Austria Cup and we want to put in a strong performance. The squad is a good mix of World Championship-experienced players and those who are currently making a case for themselves. For the latter, it is about presenting themselves and showing that they belong in a World Championship team. Some regulars and World Championship-experienced players who are not here now will then be considered in February.”
Poland, newly promoted to the Top Division, will be visiting Klagenfurt, alongside Hungary and Italy, two nations looking to return immediately to the world's top 16. Austria open the tournament against Hungary on Thursday at 19:00. And Roger Bader leaves no doubt about what the team want in front of their home crowd: “Naturally, we want to win our own tournament.”
The four-nation tournament will be played in a semi-final/final format, with Austria facing Hungary in their opening match on Thursday, 14 December 2023 at 19:00. On Friday, they will then face either Italy or Poland at 17:00.
