The new European Women’s Hockey League and win2day Austrian Women’s Hockey League season gets under way with a full-throttle weekend. While EWHL champions Aisulu Almaty open league play, several exciting match-ups are on the schedule on Saturday – including the first win2day AWHL live game, Lakers Kärnten against Sabres St. Pölten, on Sporteurope.TV.

The new season begins with the reigning champions: Aisulu Almaty open the European Women’s Hockey League on Friday with a home game against HK PSRZ Bratislava. The Kazakh champions most recently suffered a 3:6 defeat in the Eurocup Berlin, making – as they did last year – a false start to the new campaign. Bratislava, too, will be looking to bounce back following a Eurocup defeat to Sabres St. Pölten and build on a strong previous season, in which they reached the EWHL semi-finals.

Saturday: Five games, Sporteurope.TV premiere

The teams in the win2day Austrian Women’s Hockey League also enter the fray on Saturday. Two all-Austrian match-ups are on the schedule, both of which count towards the AWHL and the EWHL. The focus will particularly be on Lakers Kärnten against Sabres St. Pölten, which will be broadcast free of charge for the first time on Sporteurope.TV. The Sabres, the inaugural AWHL champions, take on the Carinthian side, who finished an impressive third in the debut season.

At the same time, DEC Salzburg Eagles host league newcomers Villach Lady Hawks, who gained AWHL experience in last season’s qualifying round and even recorded a win against the Eagles. There is also plenty happening internationally on Saturday: the Budapest derby between Budapest Jegkorong Akademia and MAC Budapest promises excitement, while HK PSRZ Bratislava host Styria’s KSV Highlanders and EC Graz Huskies face EVB Eagles.

The EWHL champions not only open the season but also bring the first weekend to a close. On Sunday, Aisulu Almaty host EVB Eagles, who begin their season with a road trip and are in action for the second time after an intensive opening schedule.
