WEV put on a show in victory over HDK Maribor – Lustenau cele­brate emphatic derby win against Dorn­birn

The Wiener Eislauf-Verein hosted HDK Maribor at the WEV Arena at Heumarkt. Both teams engaged in an intense battle from the outset, with the Viennese making the better start: Stephan Rossmann fired from the right and caught Maribor netminder Lazar Ilić off guard for the early 1:0 (4nd minute).

WEV then had their first power play but were unable to extend their lead. At the other end, the Füchse also had a power-play opportunity shortly afterwards, including a brief five-on-three spell. However, the Slovenians were likewise unable to score with the man advantage. As in most games in the East, this one developed into a close and exciting contest in the opening period.

The second period initially saw further penalties for both sides, but no goals in the opening stages. Shortly after the halfway mark, WEV struck twice to open up a comfortable three-goal lead: a Lukas Kaider power-play shot was deflected by Maribor defenceman Žan Kuzman to make it 2:0 for WEV (32nd minute). 75 seconds later, Patrick Bolterle converted the puck as it rebounded off the boards from a tight angle to make it 3:0 (33rd minute).

The floodgates had now opened for the capital side, with three more goals following in just under two minutes. First, Xaver Emslander scored from close range to make it 4:0 (35nd minute). Patrick Bolterle made it 5:0 after a powerful drive forward (36th minute). Just 15 seconds later, Lukas Pohl tapped the puck into the net from close range following a cross-ice pass to make it 6:0 (37th minute).

The Slovenians then had a power play, and Jan Bizjak pulled one back to make it 1:6 with a precise shot into the far corner (38nd minute). In the final period, Xaver Emslander burst forward and Rupert Fichtinger finished from close range to make it 7:1 (49th minute). The Viennese side remained dominant and comfortably saw out the game. With the three points, WEV are now seven points ahead of Maribor in the battle for a play-off spot.

West Division:

Lustenau give Dornbirn no chance in the derby

EHC LustenauEHC Lustenau faced Dornbirner EC Bulldogs. The favourites quickly took a two-goal lead with a quick double. First, Timo Demuth skated in front of goal and rounded Bulldogs netminder Fabian Pozzera to make it 1:0 (6nd minute). 31 seconds later, Thomas Auer made it 2:0 from the slot following a quick attack (7th minute).

The Lions continued to dominate the Bulldogs, who had only twelve skaters in their line-up. Defenceman Josef Kutzer fired from the blue line, catching the Dornbirn netminder off guard to make it 3:0 (9nd minute). Shortly afterwards, Jonas Kutzer shot from the blue line and the puck went in again, making it 4:0 (12th minute). The hosts increased their lead to 5:0 in the first period, with leading scorer Christopher D’Alvise scoring from the right while on his knees after a pass from Martin Grabher-Meier (18th minute).

Lustenau added to their lead in the second period, with Thomas Auer making it 6:0 on the power play from close range (24). Manuel Metzler scored from the slot after a fine move to make it 7:0 (28). 47 seconds later, Ricardo Bell found the net from close range for 8:0 (29). Dornbirn's Janic Heisig and Lustenau forward Jonas Kutzer then engaged in a fight, with both sent to the penalty box for five minutes each.

The ninth Lustenau goal followed in the final period, with Dominic Haberl making it 9:0 (43rd). Finnish newcomer Riku Tiainen then introduced himself to the Lustenau fans, lifting the puck into the net from close range after a rebound to make it 10:0 (49th). Shortly afterwards, Dominic Haberl was in exactly the right place to turn the puck into the net for 11:0 (52nd).

Mathias Hofer scored the Bulldogs’ consolation goal from close range to make it 1:11 in the 57th minute. Lustenau forward Thomas Auer brought his long and successful career to an end with two goals. The big Vorarlberg derby between SC Hohenems and EHC Lustenau at Eisstadion Hohenems now takes place on Monday. Top spot in Vorarlberg will be at stake.

Ö Eishockey Liga format 2025/2026

The Ö Eishockey Liga began the new season with its first matchday on 4 October 2025. In its fifth year, the format will change in Phase 1 across the two divisions: West with six teams and East with five teams. In the coming season, Division East will have two-and-a-half home-and-away rounds, resulting in 20 games per team. As in the previous season, Division West will play two home-and-away rounds, also resulting in 20 games per team.

After Phase 1, there will once again be an inter-regional playoff, beginning with the quarter-finals on 07 February 2026. In the coming season, too, a playoff pick after the regular season will provide additional excitement. The highest-placed team in each of Division West and Division East may select its quarter-final opponent from the team placed third or fourth in the other division. From the quarter-finals through the semi-finals to the final, the playoff match-ups will be decided in best-of-three series (H/A/H) from the coming season onwards.
