Very strong! Austria cele­brate a clear victory over South Korea at the Women’s World Cham­pi­onship Divi­sion IA

Following the bitter 2:3 defeat to Norway in their opening game of the 2024 IIHF Ice Hockey Women´s World Championship Division IA on Sunday evening, Austria left no doubt in game 2 against South Korea as to which anthem would be played at the end. The Koreans’ goal was under constant siege.

However, the Asians were tenacious in their own zone, repeatedly disrupting Austria’s play cleverly, until Annika Fazokas broke the deadlock in the 17th minute and set the tone for a furious evening.

Anna Meixner made it 2:0 with her first goal of this World Championship before the first break. Korea were able to hold that scoreline in the middle period, but then fell apart towards the end.

Immediately after the start of the final period, Anna Meixner, who was also named player of the game, made it 3:0. Then, at one-minute intervals towards the end of the game, Lena Dauböck, Tamara Grascher and Meixner again secured an 6:0 victory that was fully deserved, even by that margin.

Magdalena Luggin also recorded a shutout in her first World Championship game.

Tamara Grascher: “After 40 minutes of patience, everything we had trained for came together. At the end, you could see what we are capable of offensively. We need to build on that in two days’ time. Scoring a goal at the home World Championship in Klagenfurt is, of course, also something very special.”

Annika Fazokas: “We knew from the outset that the Koreans would be very compact, especially in their defensive zone. When you are dominant or have lots of scoring chances, you tend to hold on to the puck for too long or stop moving it quickly. Our focus was on continuing to move the puck quickly. It was really a must-win game for us, but those wins do you an incredible amount of good when you bring them home confidently and the result is so clear; it gives you confidence.”
