U20 World Championship squad named
Interim Head Coach Philipp Pinter and his coaching staff have made their decisions. The squad for the U20 World Championship 2022, which begins in Edmonton (CAN) on 9 August, has been confirmed. A total of 25 players will travel across the Atlantic on 3 August, where they will play two further warm-up games before opening their World Championship campaign against Germany on 11 August.

“It is important that our players play with enjoyment and passion, and that they are also able to enjoy the World Championship. Many Austrians have never had this opportunity and many may never get it,” stresses Philipp Pinter and adds: “When you walk into Rogers Place, one of the most modern ice hockey arenas in North America, it is naturally pretty cool for us coaches too.”
28 players gathered in Ferlach last week for the final World Championship preparations on home soil. The squad has now been reduced to 25 players. Ralf Kropiunig, Mark Mußbacher, Patrick Söllinger, Mathias Böhm and Stefan Klassek are currently on standby. Martin Urbanek and Maximilian Hengelmüller will join the squad, with both currently completing their basic military service and being released for the U20 World Championship. This means that 19 players come from clubs in the domestic win2day ICE Hockey League, while six play for foreign teams.
The two NHL prospects Marco Kasper and Vinzenz Rohrer will not be involved, as they have been given a break following an intense 2021/2022 season. But even without the two figureheads, the direction for Philipp Pinter is clearly mapped out: “Today’s ice hockey world is very transparent. Our players know the opposing players from social media and highlight videos from the various leagues. We have to show our boys that they are not invincible either. If you take time and space away from a good player, they too will have problems. And that is precisely our goal.”
“Our players know what a stage the U20 World Championship is. We coaches just have to get it into their heads that they have nothing to lose. They can only win,” adds Assistant Coach Patrick Harand.
Due to numerous coronavirus cases, the U20 World Championship 2022 was abandoned at the end of December last year. It will now be replayed in Edmonton from 9 to 20 August, albeit without Russia and Belarus, the two nations excluded by the IIHF because of the war of aggression against Ukraine.
There will be no relegation at this World Championship. Austria will therefore also take part in the next scheduled U20 World Championship, which will once again be held in Canada, in Halifax and Moncton, from 26 December 2022 to 5 January 2023.
