U20 World Championship: National team departs for Canada – Jakob Lippitsch called up
Austria’s U20 national team departed for Canada on Thursday morning, where they will first face Germany in Antigonish on 20 December, Austria’s final group-stage opponent at the World Championship itself, before taking on Slovakia in Truro on 23 December. The final World Championship squad will then be selected, with two players to be cut from the current roster. Jakob Lippitsch has been called up following Nico Kramer’s injury-enforced withdrawal. Austria will open the World Championship against Sweden in Halifax on 26 December, with the major objective of staying in the top division.

“We are positively excited and delighted that it is finally getting under way,” reports Head Coach Kirk Furey. This World Championship is particularly special for the Canadian-born Carinthian by choice in many respects. Antigonish is the birthplace of the man who took over the national team in the autumn. Family, friends and companions will be in attendance not only for the friendly against Germany on 20 December. Following the final warm-up match against Slovakia in Truro on 23 December, the final squad will have to be selected. “We have a difficult decision ahead of us,” emphasises Furey.
Austria will begin the tournament against Sweden on St Stephen’s Day (26 December), before facing Czechia, hosts Canada and Germany. The major objective is, naturally, to stay in the top division, which can currently be achieved in two ways: by finishing in 4th place in the group stage and thereby advancing to the quarter-finals, or by winning the best-of-three relegation series.
Many eyes at this World Championship will be on Vinzenz Rohrer, who was drafted 75th overall by the Montral Canadians, and on David Reinbacher, who has been closely watched by scouts for weeks. Jakob Lippitsch has been called up for the U20 World Championship after Nico Kramer was forced to withdraw through injury.
