U20 World Championship: Kasper and Rohrer given a break
Austria's U20 national team is currently preparing in Ferlach under interim Head Coach Philipp Pinter for the upcoming U20 World Championship, which will be made up in August following its cancellation last December. Due to the heavy workload of recent months, the two standout players Marco Kasper and Vinzenz Rohrer will be given a break in August.

"In consultation with everyone involved, we have decided not to call up Marco and Vinzenz for the U20 World Championship. Both players have had a demanding schedule in recent months, especially Marco, who, in addition to his appearances in the Swedish league and the Champions Hockey League, was also on the ice at the U20 World Championship, which was later cancelled in December, and at the World Championship in May," explains ÖEHV Sports Director Roger Bader.
This measure is intended to prevent the players from being exposed to an excessive workload. At this year's NHL Draft, Kasper was selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the 1st round, 8th overall, while Vinzenz Rohrer was selected by the Montreal Canadians in the 3rd round, 75th overall.
Just a few days after the draft, Marco Kasper was also handed an "Entry Level Contract" directly by the franchise. The plan for the coming season is for the 18-year-old to continue playing for Rögle, where he is currently based and preparing for the season with the team.
"The past year with Rögle, winning the Champions Hockey League, the experiences and successes at the World Championship in Finland and, of course, the NHL Draft, was incredible. Roger Bader knows that I am always ready to play for the national team. Nevertheless, I am also grateful to him for this break. It allows me to focus fully on the tasks ahead," says Marco Kasper.
Rohrer excelled for the Ottawa 67's in the Ontario Hockey League last season, recording 48 points (25 goals and 23 assists) in 64 regular-season games, as well as four points (one goal, three assists) in the playoffs. He was also one of the most eye-catching players in the red-white-red jersey at the U20 World Championship in Canada last December, which was cancelled due to COVID-19, with his carefree style of play.
Like Kasper, he too will be given a break after the intense season, Vinzenz Rohrer: "Of course, I would have liked to go to the U20 World Championship. With the NHL Combine, the draft and much more, I have been travelling a great deal in recent weeks. That is why I am also glad to now be able to focus entirely on my preparation."
Without the two NHL prospects, the U20 national team is currently training hard in Ferlach and preparing for the World Championship in Edmonton (CAN) from 9–20 August. Philipp Pinter will serve as interim Head Coach both during the preparations and at the U20 World Championship itself. From autumn, Marco Pewal will once again take charge of the current U20 age group. Sports Director Roger Bader will also travel to Canada as Head of Delegation.
Due to the ban on Russia and Belarus, the team will play four rather than five preliminary-round games. Their opponents are Germany, Sweden, the USA and Switzerland. There will be no relegated team at this tournament. Austria will therefore also take part in the next scheduled U20 World Championship, 26.12.2022–05.01.2023, which will again be held in Canada (Halifax & Moncton).
28 players are taking part in the current World Championship preparations in Ferlach, with 25 set to travel to Canada at the beginning of August.
