U20 national team narrowly loses to hosts Norway after a battle in Stavanger

Austria started their second tournament game at the DNB Arena with goalie Patrick Grascher and had their first power play after almost seven minutes, but were unable to score. The match was an evenly balanced and hard-fought affair in the opening period. The ÖEHV selection showed good penalty killing during their first short-handed situation. With just under two and a half minutes remaining in the period, Austria had their second power-play opportunity, but Norway’s keeper Albert Morgan Høe Englund did not concede.

The second period got off to the worst possible start, as Norway took the lead with their first shot after the restart through Niklas Olsen after just 19 seconds of play, making it 1:0 (21.). Almost three minutes later, Niklas Olsen struck again to extend the hosts’ lead to 2:0 (24.). Two seconds after the halfway point of the game, Lukas Finckenhagen made it 3:0 (31.).

But Austria battled their way back into the match: first, David Waschnig reduced the deficit to 1:3 on the power play (36.), before Paul Oberhauser scored to make it 2:3 just under two and a half minutes later (38.). This was followed by a penalty, 30 seconds of which carried over into the final period. 

In the final period, Austria had the chance to equalise on the power play, but the narrow deficit remained before Ludvik Bakkevig made it 4:2 for Norway (53.). Teams coached by Head Coach Philipp Pinter are not known for giving in, and less than two minutes later Adrian Gesson reduced the deficit to 3:4 (55.) to make the match exciting again.

In the end, Austria pulled goalie Patrick Grascher for an extra skater, but could not find an equaliser against their World Championship opponents, despite recording 34:24 more shots on goal. They will meet again in Bled at the 2026 IIHF Ice Hockey U20 World Championship Division IA on 10 December.
