U20 and U18 squads confirmed for November break

“I am looking forward to the first team camp. The aim is for us to get to know each other, quickly gel as a team and for the boys to implement our philosophy and tactical requirements. This is how we want to create our own identity and take the first steps towards the World Championship in December,” explains U20 head coach Kirk Furey.

The Canadian-born coach has worked in the youth set-up of record champions KAC for years and therefore already knows many players personally. “I want to get to know every single one of them even better and see them perform on the ice. Only then can we make the right decisions with the World Championship in mind,” stresses the 46-year-old.

With Latvia, Denmark and Hungary, the St. Pölten Cup features one U20 top-division nation and two U20 Division IA nations.

ÖEHV men's sporting director Roger Bader: “The Four Nations Tournament in November is the final opportunity to assess players before the squad for World Championship preparation is selected. The matches against Latvia, Hungary and Denmark will provide many insights for December.”

At the 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship in Canada, from 26.12.2022 to 05.01.2023, Austria's selection will face Sweden, Czechia, Canada and Germany in Halifax.

U18 to test against ITA, SLO & HUN

Alongside the senior and U20 national teams, the U18 team will contest the Ferlach Cup. Head coach Philipp Pinter had an initial opportunity to get to know the players in the summer, but will now see them in action for the first time in the three matches against Italy, Slovenia and Hungary.

"There have been many discussions with various head coaches in recent weeks and we have scouted in person to find this squad. Some players are being given the opportunity to showcase themselves. Overall, our aim is to find not only the best players, but above all the right players, who can and, most importantly, want to fulfil their assigned roles. November is already a first step towards our season objective, which is to hold our own at the World Championship in Bled and earn promotion," explains Head coach Philipp Pinter.

“These are the first international matches under the new coaching staff. Here too, important insights will be gained for the World Championship in April 2022,” emphasises Roger Bader.

In spring 2022, from 10. to 16. April, the U18 national team will face Italy, Slovenia, South Korea, Poland and Estonia at the World Championship Division IB in Bled (SLO).
