U20: 4:2 win in first World Championship warm-up game against Latvia
Less than 15 hours after Austria's U20 men's national ice hockey team arrived at their hotel in Edmonton (CAN), they took to the ice for their first warm-up game. Against Latvia, they built a 3:0 lead by the 48th minute, before coming under pressure again a few minutes before the end following a quick double from their opponents. Luca Auer finally sealed the 4:2 warm-up win with an empty-net goal in the 60th minute. On Saturday, at 13:00 local time, they have one final warm-up game against Czechia before opening their World Championship campaign against Germany on 10 August at 20:00.

The team led by interim head coach Philipp Pinter, who is deputising for Marco Pewal at the upcoming U20 World Championship, travelled to Canada on Wednesday. The 15-hour journey did not end until shortly after midnight Edmonton time, when they arrived at the hotel. A few hours later, the Austrian players were back on the ice for their first training session, before the puck dropped for the warm-up game against Latvia at 15:00. Latvia had arrived in the home of ice hockey straight from a four-week training camp and enjoyed slightly more possession over the full 60 minutes.
"But we kept them well to the outside and gave them few high-quality chances," says Pinter, revealing one key to success. Ian Scherzer gave the bench its first reason to celebrate in the 7th minute, Martin Urbanek made it 2:0 in the 36th, and Senna Peeters extended the lead to 3:0 in the 48th.
Latvia cut the deficit to 2:3 between the 51th and 55th minutes and pushed for the equaliser. But Austria played intelligently in their own zone, and Luca Auer made sure of the 4:2 win with his empty-net goal.
Head coach Philipp Pinter: "It was a very good performance from the whole team. The commitment was excellent, and the performance was good and consistent. We know what we need to work on; we lost our assignments a few times in the defensive zone. Our penalty kill worked very well, we did not concede a goal there, and Leon Sommer also played a superb game. Czechia will be a significantly stronger opponent again on Saturday."
