U18 World Cham­pi­onship Divi­sion IB: Austria battles to a 4:3 win in OT over South Korea

Austria led 3:1 with 91 seconds remaining. South Korea had already pulled their goaltender for a sixth skater, first scoring to make it 2:3 before equalising with one second left on the clock. In overtime, Johannes Dobrovolny sealed the win for his team with the Game Winning Goal. Despite the victory, the Austrian camp is not entirely satisfied, having dropped a point which could yet prove decisive in the battle for promotion. On Friday at 11:30, live on the Krone livestream, Austria face Lithuania in their final game.

The battle for No. 1 could become very exciting again on the final matchday. The situation: Austria will be promoted to Division IA if they beat Lithuania in regulation time and France lose to either Estonia or South Korea. Lithuania will win gold if they beat Austria, regardless of whether it is in regulation time, overtime or a penalty shootout. France also still have a chance of finishing No. 1, but must beat both Estonia and South Korea in any case.

The game against South Korea initially went according to plan for the ÖEHV selection. Dominik Ferner gave his team the lead as early as the 2nd minute. Austria dominated the game but were repeatedly denied by South Korean netminder Donggeun Lee. At the other end, they allowed the Asians just two shots on goal. Little changed in the second period. Austria dominated, South Korea defended well and repeatedly cleared the puck out of their own zone. One of those clearances led to the 1:1 equaliser in the 31st minute.

Austria returned to the ice focused after the second interval and deservedly took a 3:1 lead through goals from Nico Koschek (46th) and Johannes Dobrovolny (54th/PP). Everything pointed to a win for Austria, but South Korea proved to be the spoilers from the ÖEHV perspective. In the 59th minute, they pulled their goaltender and immediately scored to close the gap. With an additional skater on the ice, they even equalised exactly one second before the end of the game.

In overtime, Johannes Dobrovolny was once again on hand to secure Austria the win and keep their promotion hopes alive.

Head Coach Peter Schweda: "It feels like a defeat. We were not ready to win in regulation time, but we are happy that we ultimately left the ice as winners."
