U18 World Cham­pi­onship: Clear win for Austria against Poland

At the start of the 2022 IIHF U18 Women´s World Championship on Tuesday, Austria's U18 women's national ice hockey team suffered a bitter 2:3 overtime defeat to South Korea despite dominating the game.

On Wednesday evening, the team responded with a 4:0 win over Poland and now leads the table as planned.

Austria's women started at a high tempo in the Nockhalle against South Korea, producing good attacks and controlling the game from the outset. Karolina Hengelmüller gave Austria the planned 1:0 lead on the power play in the first period, but they conceded the 1:1 shortly before the break.

The team made too little of its overall superiority and even found itself 1:2 behind shortly before the end of the game. Hannah Obermayer took her team into overtime, where Nayeon Kim secured South Korea's 3:2 win with her second goal after just 36 seconds of three-on-three play (61).

The right response against Poland

Poland felt the effects of the response to this bitter start to the World Championship on Wednesday evening. Austria once again played from a skating and technical advantage, creating countless scoring opportunities. This time, with significantly improved finishing.

After just 4:12 minutes, local favourite Zoey Hobitsch scored to make it 1:0, with Hannah Schwarzer increasing the lead to 2:0 just five minutes later.

Austria allowed Poland a greater share of possession in the middle period, before finally wrapping things up in the final period. Zoey Hobitsch (44) and Marja Linzbichler (49) sealed the 4:0 final score.

Chinese Taipei beat South Korea

In the first game of the day, Chinese Taipei beat South Korea 4:1, meaning Austria can once again secure 1st place and the associated promotion under its own steam. Main rivals Denmark began on Tuesday evening with a clear 4:0 win over Chinese Taipei and face Poland tomorrow, Thursday.
