U18 Women ready for World Championship Division IA
Shortly after the New Year, Head Coach Mario Bellina assembled his squad in Telfs for the final preparations ahead of the 2024 IIHF Ice Hockey Women´s World Championship Division IA, which begins on Saturday. In the final warm-up game before the World Championship, they lost 1:3 to Japan on Wednesday evening, but Bellina believes his team is ready for the challenges ahead.

“We are confident; things are getting better all the time. A tough tournament awaits us. Fortunately, all the players are fit and healthy, and the goaltenders have recently shown good form,” notes Mario Bellina. Although the final warm-up game against Japan went 1:3 to the Asian side, the Head Coach saw a clear step in the right direction compared to the 0:3 defeat against Hungary shortly before New Year’s Eve.
“We are well positioned defensively. In offence, we need to see whether we can give the players another idea to create more scoring chances. The more pucks we get to the net, the more dangerous we are. That has to be our objective,” reveals Mario Bellina regarding the tactical approach for the World Championship.
The action gets under way on 6 January at 12:30 against France, followed by hosts Italy (7 January, 16:00), Japan (9 January, 16:00), Hungary (10 January, 12:30) and Denmark (12 January, 12:30).
In what is a fairly evenly matched group, Mario Bellina does not see any clear favourite for promotion to the top division: “I do not think one nation will stand out and dominate all the others. Denmark are the only unknown quantity; we know all the others and have been close in each of our recent games against them. A tournament like this can develop its own momentum. Our objective is to collect points.”
Promotion to Division IA was secured in Radenthein in September 2022. A few months later, the team successfully stayed in the division in Ritten (ITA). Italy is once again hosting the tournament this year, with Egna as the venue.
