U16 title goes to Styria

Eishockey Akademie Steiermark came out on top in a closely contested best-of-three final for the Austrian U16 championship title.

In the opening clash in Graz on Saturday, a penalty shootout was needed to decide the first winner after the game had ended 3:3 in regulation time. The Vienna side came from behind twice, but Marc-Andre Putzhuber won the shootout for the Styrians.

The second game of the series was again played in Graz on Sunday. The Vienna side had to win to force a deciding game on home ice. Accordingly, the Capitals entered the game highly motivated and took an early 1:0 lead.

Eishockey Akademie Steiermark turned the game around in the second period, ultimately claiming a 4:1 win and with it the Austrian U16 championship title.
