U16 national team lose to Hungary in final game

The final match against hosts Hungary was a close affair. Leon Buzek gave Austria a 1:0 lead at 35 minutes, before Agoston Schmidt equalised for Hungary at 47 minutes in the final period. Schmidt struck again on the power play at 53 minutes to put Hungary 2:1 ahead.

Luc Van Ee equalised for the U16 national team at 56 minutes. Just as everyone was expecting overtime, Richárd Orgoványi went one-on-one with goaltender Lennox Setzinger and scored Hungary's celebrated 3:2 winner 55 seconds before the end.

Win over Italy on Friday

A strong second outing for Austria's U16 national team at the tournament in Hungary on Friday.

Head Coach Florian Mühlstein’s team beat Italy 6:1. Johannes Dobrovolny made it 1:0 for Austria with the first shot on goal after exactly eight seconds. Dobrovolny added his second goal in the eleventh minute to make it 2:0. Ben Summer (14.) and Lukas Kiesling-Zach (16.) extended the lead to 4:0 in the first period to wrap things up early.

Rene Goldschmidt made it 5:1 on the power play at 36 minutes after Italy had got on the scoresheet, before Luc Van Ee put the finishing touch on the 6:1 win. (54.)

U16 head coach Florian Mühlsteinfollowing the convincing win over Italy: "In contrast to the game against Slovenia, the team was able to implement the instructions from the outset. We took a 1:0 lead after just eight seconds. Over the course of the first period, we were able to create more chances thanks to good puck management and a solid defensive performance, and therefore ended the period 4:0 ahead. The team also played solidly for the remainder of the game and, thanks to the strong support of our goaltender Luca Haitzmann, the win was never really in danger."

Opening defeat to Slovenia

The U16 national team opened their campaign on Thursday with a 0:6 defeat to Slovenia.

After the match, the head coach analysed: "After an even start, the opposition grew into the game better than we did due to their superiority in one-on-one situations. In addition, we conceded goals at very unfavourable moments. Over the course of the game, we were able to make some positive plays in the offensive zone, but we lacked the final determination to score a goal. In conclusion, we had to accept a defeat that was too heavy against an opponent who was definitely on our level, due to our own mistakes."
