U16: Narrow defeat follows win over Germany

After just 176 seconds, the Austrians took a 1:0 lead through a superb long-range shot from Gloria Henek and then dominated both the puck and their opponents throughout the first period. The return: a shot ratio of 14:2! Germany came out for the second period like a different team, applying pressure and enjoying clearly more possession. 

However, the pressure and persistence of their neighbours proved fruitless. The U16 team confidently saw out their narrow lead in the third period, allowing just two shots on goal. 

Day two brought the clash with Finland, who had surprisingly lost 1:2 to hosts Hungary in a penalty shootout in their opener. In 2019, the U16 team at the time had claimed a shootout victory, but this time the Finns came out on top, winning 2:1. After Finland had taken a 1:0 lead, Zoey Hobitsch levelled at 1:1 with a determined drive down the right in the third period (38th minute). Finland scored the winning goal for 2:1 on the power play in the 42nd minute. Austria head coach Mario Bellina pulled goaltender Rosina Fichtinger, but they were unable to find an equaliser. 

Austria now face Hungary on Friday evening to conclude the group stage. The placement games are scheduled for Saturday.
