The score remained 0:0 deep into the second half of the game in the gunsmiths' town before Austria stepped up a gear and scored three goals in the space of two minutes. Lucas Gritznig gave Austria a 1:0 lead (at 37), before Lucas Hartl made it 2:0 just 28 seconds later (at 37). Niclas Micelli extended Austria's lead to 3:0 later in the second period (at 39).
Italy reduced the deficit to 1:3 early in the final period, before Lucas Hartl sealed the 4:1 win for the team led by Head Coach Peter Schweda (at 58).
Austria face another neighbouring country, Slovenia, in their final game on Sunday.
Head Coach Peter Schweda: "That was a much more controlled game today than yesterday against Hungary. There were a number of good things, we had more control of the puck and made some good plays. We allowed very few chances at the back, most of which only came after mistakes from us. Today, we also got our reward with the goals. All in all, it was a good performance."
