The team coached by Head Coach Michael Schurig celebrated an 4:1 win over their Italian counterparts at the Eisarena Kufstein on Sunday. The visitors had taken the lead through Philipp Winkler on a shorthanded goal in the first period. Austria's U15 players once again showed character and turned the game around.
First, Benedikt Hengelmüller scored the equaliser in the second period (34.). Simon Cseh then gave Austria a 2:1 lead in the final period (49.). Nico Koschek sealed the 4:1 victory with two goals (54., 60./EN).
Defeat to Hungary
Austria's U15 national team played its second game of the Kufstein Cup on Saturday. As against Team Bayern, Austria initially fell behind. The visitors led 2:0 for a long time before Tristan Schall pulled one back in the 39 minute.
Schall also brought Austria level at 2:2 in the final period. This time, however, the U15 were unable to complete the comeback. Hungary extended their lead to 4:2 before Ben Karner made it tense again in the 57 minute.
With 64 seconds remaining, Miklós István Gyulai sealed Hungary's 5:3 win with a shot into the empty Austrian net.
Superb comeback against Team Bayern
The ÖEHV team were already 0:3 behind against Head Coach Michael Schurig in Friday's game against the Bavarian selection, but launched an impressive comeback from the midway point of the game.
Paul Sintschnig put Austria on the scoreboard in the 32 minute before bringing them within 2:3 in the 55 minute. In the end, the U15 national team risked everything, Schurig pulled goaltender Martin Haim, and Simon Cseh sent Austria into overtime with 14 seconds remaining.
There, it was Simon Cseh again who scored the much-celebrated 4:3 winner in the 63 minute of three-on-three overtime.
U15 coach Michael Schurig analysed the game: "We were not ready in the first period; for many, it was probably their first experience of international ice hockey. There was no willingness to skate and too many lapses in concentration. After 20 minutes, we were 0:3 behind. We settled into the game a little better in the second period, and a very strong Martin Haim kept us in the game as we went into the break 1:3 down. In the third period, we saw increasingly more ÖEHV hockey, the team showed character and eventually equalised six-on-five with 14 seconds remaining. We were able to score the winner in three-on-three overtime."
