The situation surrounding the coronavirus, which has largely brought sporting activity to a standstill this year, particularly in youth ice hockey, is high on the agenda at Tuesday's Executive Board meeting of the Austrian Ice Hockey Federation in Vienna.
The previous classification as "elite sport" was based on the age groups and leagues eligible to take part in IIHF World Championships. In addition, the precautionary principle was applied to ensure a responsible approach to the Covid-19 pandemic. The ongoing evaluation of the health and legal framework conditions over recent weeks by the ÖEHV in cooperation with experts has led to a new decision. The U14 to U11 age groups and Para ice hockey are now also defined as elite sport and may resume training with immediate effect. The Austrian championships in these categories will, however, remain suspended.
"Youth sport has suffered particularly during these times and, following a renewed comprehensive evaluation of the framework conditions, we have come to the conclusion that we can cautiously resume training in the youngest age groups as well as in Para ice hockey. Subject to strict compliance with all legal requirements, meaning that a valid prevention concept must be in place, coronavirus tests must be carried out and the existing restrictions on leaving home must be observed, training is once again possible for these teams," explains President Dr Klaus Hartmann.
The ÖEHV's recommendation for the resumption of training is to limit activities to skills training in small groups and refrain from any physical contact. Under the conditions mentioned, off-ice training is also possible.
