Austria's women concluded last season with a win and promotion to the Top Division. They began the new campaign with a victory on Saturday evening. Featuring nine players from the successful World Championship squad as well as several new young players, they looked ready from the outset against Norway.
In this line-up, they had only had three training sessions together, but quickly found their feet. That was also praised by Head Coach Alexander Bröms: “We have worked hard over the past few days and had plenty of discussions. The more experienced players welcomed the new ones well and showed them everything. They immediately knew what their roles were for the game.”
And the entire team carried them out almost perfectly. They tried to give the Norwegians little space and pressured them early. Going forward, they created chances, and Anja Trummer converted one of them shortly before the first intermission to make it 1:0.
Both the second and third periods saw both teams create several more chances, but it was to remain the only goal of the game. Much to the delight of the Austrians, Captain Anna Meixner: “I think it was a very interesting game for us, a good preparation game for the coming season. We have a very young team with many new faces who, in my view, did a good job.”
Head Coach Alexander Bröms: “The fighting spirit was there. It was a good game in which we deserved the win. The players handled things well in their own zone to ensure we did not concede over the course of the entire game.”
Against Italy, Anna Meixner will no longer take to the ice, as she will already be on her way back to North America. The Salzburg native has set herself ambitious goals for her second season in the PWHL: "Above all, I want to have a better season than last year. Everything was still new for me then and I first had to adjust to the smaller ice surface. I think I can come into this year with a completely different level of confidence. I want to give my best game after game and am looking forward to what is to come."
