Thomas Vanek inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame

The induction ceremony will take place on the final day of the 2026 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship in Zurich (SUI). A total of seven new members will be inducted, bringing the overall number to 258.

Thomas Vanek moved to Canada at the age of 14 and later played for the University of Minnesota in the NCAA, where he led the Golden Gophers to the title in 2003 and was named MVP of the Frozen Four Playoffs. In the same year, he was selected fifth overall by the Buffalo Sabres in the first round of the NHL Draft. It was the highest draft pick by an Austrian until David Reinbacher was selected at the same spot by the Montreal Canadiens in 2023.

In his rookie season, Thomas Vanek scored 25 goals and played 1.029 games over a total of 14 seasons. He took part in the NHL All Star Game in 2009 and was named captain by the Sabres in the 2013/2014 season, becoming the first Austrian in the NHL to wear the C on his chest.

He represented Austria at the 2004 World Championship, the 2008 World Championship Division I, the 2009 World Championship, the 2013 World Championship and the 2014 Olympic Games, and was part of various ÖEHV youth teams.

In 2016, Thomas Vanek was selected for Team Europe at the World Cup of Hockey, reaching the final, where they ultimately lost to Canada in two games.
