Thomas Vanek becomes fourth Austrian inducted into IIHF Hall of Fame

Seven ice hockey greats were inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame during the final weekend of the 2026 World Championship in Zurich (SUI). Among them was Thomas Vanek, the second Austrian player after Sepp Puschnig to receive the honour. Together with ÖEHV honorary presidents Hans Dobida and Dieter Kalt Sr, who were inducted as officials, four Austrians are now represented in the Hall of Fame.

Thomas Vanek moved to Canada at the age of 14 and later played for the University of Minnesota in the NCAA, where he led the Golden Gophers to the 2003 title and was named MVP of the Frozen Four playoffs. That same year, he was drafted fifth in the first round by the Buffalo Sabers in the NHL draft. It was the highest pick of an Austrian until David Reinbacher was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in the same position in 2023.

In his rookie season, Thomas Vanek scored 25 goals and played 1,029 games in a total of 14 seasons. In 2009 he took part in the NHL All Star Game and was named captain by the Sabers in the 2013/2014 season, becoming the first Austrian in the NHL to wear the C on his chest.

He represented Austria at the 2004 World Championship, the 2008 World Championship Division I, the 2009 World Championship, the 2013 World Championship and the 2014 Olympic Games and was part of various ÖEHV youth national teams.

In 2016, Thomas Vanek was nominated for Team Europe at the World Championship of Hockey, with whom he reached the final, where they ultimately lost to Canada in two games.
