“We want to play against nations ranked above us as often and as regularly as possible. That is the only way to continually develop and reach the level of these nations. The aim is to adapt to the pace and intensity these nations bring onto the ice. The more often and regularly we play against these nations, the quicker we will reach their level,” explains Roger Bader.

Following the 2022 World Championship, where it finished in eleventh place overall, Austria moved up to 15th place in the World Ranking. Denmark (10th), Norway (12th) and France (13th) are ranked ahead of Team Austria. Austria will also be in the same group as Denmark and France at the 2023 World Championship.

“Our aim is not only to catch up with these nations on the ice, but also to overtake them. That is precisely why matches and tournaments like these are important for our development,” the head coach continues.

For the Four Nations Tournament in Copenhagen, the team has set itself both a performance objective and a result objective. While the result objective remains internal to the team, Roger Bader provides an insight into the performance objective: “We want to represent Austria and Austrian ice hockey in the best possible way and deliver a good team performance. For the players, it is about putting themselves forward for the future. We also want to refine and improve our style of play from tournament to tournament.”
