Ten minutes short of a sensation: 3:6 defeat in final World Championship warm-up
In their final warm-up game for the U20 World Championship in Edmonton (CAN), where they face Germany in their opener next Wednesday at 20:00 local time, Austria’s red-white-red players had to concede a 3:6 defeat to the Czech Republic. With ten minutes remaining, the score was still 3:3.

“It was an excellent game from us. We were well in the game and even more compact and stable defensively than against Latvia,” said Head Coach Philipp Pinter, who was pleased with his players’ performance.
And deservedly so. After Oskar Maier scored in the 16th minute, Austria took a 1:0 lead into the first intermission. In the second period, our neighbours turned the score around and had opened up a 3:1 lead by the 36th minute. A double strike within ten seconds from Leon Wallner and Oskar Maier again levelled the score at 3:3 in the 38th minute.
Austria more than held their own against the Czechs in the final period too, even hitting the post. In the 50th minute, the two-time world champions in this age group finally regained the lead and ultimately prevailed 6:3.
Head Coach Philipp Pinter: “In the end, it was the small details that made the difference. The boys have seen that at this level, you have to be tactically disciplined for 60 minutes and stick to the system. We are very proud of the team and of how they implemented what we discussed over the past few days. It was important for the boys to see how well they play when they perform as a compact unit. Now it is a case of putting it behind us, analysing it and focusing entirely on the first World Championship game for three days.”
