Team Camp #1: First opportunity to earn a World Championship call-up
Austria’s men’s national ice hockey team begins its preparations for the 2024 World Championship, taking place in Prague and Ostrava, on Easter Monday. In the first of five preparation weeks, the team will face Latvia, bronze medallists at the 2023 World Championship, twice in Riga (LAT). 25 players now have the opportunity to earn a place in the second week and put themselves forward for the 2024 World Championship. They include four youth national team players.

An average age of 24,6 years and a combined 509 international appearances – Head Coach Roger Bader’s first squad comprises World Championship-experienced players and several prospects. The latter include Thomas Klassek, Patrick Söllinger, Ian Scherzer and Gregor Biber. After this week with the senior national team, Biber will move straight on to the U18 team, which will face Germany, Denmark, Japan, Hungary and Ukraine at the U18 World Championship Division IA in Frederikshavn, Denmark, from 14 to 20 April.
Dominique Heinrich can look forward to a milestone, as he will play his 100th international match in the second game against Latvia on 5 April. Alongside David Madlener and Kilian Zündel, the 33-year-old was part of the World Championship squads in 2022 and 2023. Dominic Hackl and Nico Feldner, both of whom took to the ice in Tampere (FIN) in 2022, also bring World Championship experience. They are joined by numerous players who have already demonstrated their qualities in the past and are now competing for a World Championship jersey.
At the first team camp of the World Championship preparations, Roger Bader must still do without those players whose seasons with their respective clubs have not yet ended. Accordingly, the first week is all about scouting and testing, Head Coach Roger Bader: "The young players are once again being given an opportunity to prove themselves. Over the past two years, there have repeatedly been young players who were involved from the first team camp and, on the strength of their performances, made it all the way through to the World Championship. I am already curious to see whether one of the young players can spring such a surprise again this year. It is important now that those players in particular who have not played for around five weeks get back into a competitive rhythm."
Bader sees a similar squad and similar objectivesBader at Latvia as well: "It will probably be similar for them, with a squad made up of players who already have World Championship experience and prospects who are being scouted and tested."
The Head Coach will be supported behind the bench by Christoph Brandner, who will be involved as Assistant Coach at all preparation camps and at the World Championship, as well as Stefan Ulmer and, for the first time, Bernhard Starkbaum as Goalie Coach.
