Start of World Championship preparations: Austria begin with plenty of experience
Austria's men's national ice hockey team will begin their preparations for the 2025 World Championship in Vienna next week. In week 1, when they face Latvia in friendlies on 4 and 5 April, Head Coach Roger Bader can already rely on plenty of experience. Tickets for the game on 5 April are available via the ÖEHV ticket shop, with both games broadcast live on Krone TV.

The squad already features World Championship-experienced players such as Dominique Heinrich, Nico Brunner, Paul Huber and Dominic Zwerger. They are joined by numerous players who have repeatedly put themselves forward in recent years, as well as several prospects.
With Jakob Brandner and Patrick Müller, Roger Bader has called up two debutants in goal. The trio is completed by Nicolas Wieser, who made his only national team appearance to date at the Four Nations Tournament in Slovenia during the November break in 2021.
Maximilian Kirchebner and Oskar Maier are two further debutants in the 24-man roster. Training begins on 1 April, with two friendlies against Latvia, the 2023 World Championship bronze medallists, taking place on 4 and 5 April.
Roger Bader must still do without those players whose seasons with their respective clubs have not yet ended. Lukas Haudum will join the team from training camp 2 onwards (still carrying an injury), while Manuel Ganahl will join from training camp 3 onwards (currently absent for personal reasons). Accordingly, the first week will be all about scouting and testing.
Head Coach Roger Bader: "As usual, we are starting our World Championship preparations with a mix of experienced national team players and prospects. The young players are being given an opportunity to prove themselves. In recent years, there have repeatedly been young players who were involved from the first training camp and, on the strength of their performances, were able to make it all the way to the World Championship. I am already curious to see whether one of the young players can produce such a surprise again this year. It is now important that those players in particular who have not played any games for several weeks get back into a competitive rhythm."
The Swiss coach sees a similar squad and similar objectives for Latvia: "It will be similar for them, in that they will field a squad made up of players who already have World Championship experience and prospects who are being scouted and tested."
The Head Coach will be supported on the bench by Paul Ullrich and Stefan Ulmer, with Lukas Schluderbacher serving as goalie coach.
