Shutouts for Sabres St. Pölten and Salzburg Eagles in the win2day AWHL

The home teams enjoyed a strong day in the win2day Austrian Women’s Hockey League on Saturday. Sabres St. Pölten celebrated a convincing 8:0 shutout victory over Lakers Kärnten, who had to travel to St. Pölten severely depleted.

The players of the game were Lena Artner and Kinga Jokai-Szilagyi, who each recorded two goals and two assists. While Sabres St. Pölten remain within touching distance of win2day AWHL leaders KSV Highlanders thanks to this victory, Lakers Kärnten slipped to fourth place in the standings.

DEC Salzburg Eagles celebrated an important 4:0 home victory over EC Graz Huskies, moving ahead of the Styrians in the standings. After a hard-fought, scoreless opening period, Zoey Hobitsch put her team on the winning track while shorthanded early in the middle period. Agnese Aspite sealed the decision with two goals over the course of the game.

European Women’s Hockey League

Tauron Metropolia Silesia and HK PSRZ Bratislava each claimed narrow victories in the two other European Women’s Hockey League games. Having started the game bottom of the table without a win, Silesia entered the clash against KSV Highlanders, who have established themselves in the top half of the standings, as underdogs. Following a scoreless opening period, Silesia took the lead on the power play. The Silesians subsequently managed their advantage well. Just as many were expecting them to take all three points, Hilde Huisman sent the Highlanders into overtime, which produced no further goals. Silesia held their nerve in the shootout to claim their first win of the season.

The second EWHL-only encounter was similarly exciting. The hosts from Bratislava took the lead on the power play in the first period, but MAC Budapest equalised in the middle period – also on the power play. Just over three minutes from the end, Erna Tothova scored the decisive goal. Bratislava therefore remain within touching distance of league leaders Aisulu Almaty.
