SC Hohenems edge HC Kufstein again – WEV battle past Maribor at Heumarkt

EHC KundlEHC Kundl hosted league leaders EHC Lustenau in the West Division at the Eisarena Kundl on Saturday. It was the second meeting between the two teams, with the Vorarlberg side claiming a 3:1 home win in the opener at the beginning of October.

In the first period, the Lions showed why they had arrived in the Unterinntal as league leaders. Timo Demuth put them ahead on the power play after just under two minutes (at 2.) and Jonas Kutzer (at 12.) made it 2:0. However, the hosts showed their home strength, continued to put up a full fight and pulled one back through Maximilian Mackner 18 seconds before the end of the first period to make it 1:2 (at 20. ).

In the second period, Lustenau once again capitalised on a power play through Jonas Kutzer to restore their two-goal lead (at 33.) and even moved 4:1 ahead 38 seconds before the second intermission, with Felix Zipperle scoring Lustenau's fourth goal (at 40.). The visitors gave nothing away in the final period; on the contrary, Mattias Adam made it 5:1 (at 52.), which was also the final score.

SC Hohenems edge HC Kufstein in the second meeting of the season as well

SC Samina HohenemsSC Samina Hohenems faced HC Kufstein at the Herrenried Stadion in the West Division on Saturday. The Vorarlberg side had laid the foundations for what has so far been a strong season with a narrow 3:2 away win over the Dragons at the beginning of October. The trend from the exciting first meeting continued in the first period: after Kufstein took an early lead through Valentin Hammerle, who scored the 1:0 on the power play (at 5.), the Steinböcke soon equalised through Kai Fässler to make it 1:1 (at 10.).

After a scoreless middle period, both teams shifted into top gear once more in the final period. Julian Payr gave Hohenems the lead for the first time (at 45.). Moments later, Markus Prock made it 2:2 for the Dragons (at 46.). This time, Hohenems had a swift response ready: Patrick Spannring made it 3:2 for the hosts (at 48.).

The two opponents then exchanged a few pleasantries before Kufstein pulled goaltender Thomas Pfarrmaier. Hohenems said thank you and sealed the 4:2 win with Leon Schmeiser's empty-net goal 35 seconds before the end (at 60.).

First win for Wattens Penguins against Dornbirner EC Bulldogs

The WSG Swarovski Wattens Penguins eagerly awaited their West Division home opener against the Dornbirner EC Bulldogs on Saturday. In their only previous meeting, the Tyrol side suffered a narrow 3:4 defeat to the Vorarlberg side on the opening matchday at the beginning of October.

The home-strong Tyrol side made the perfect start on their own ice with a quick double strike: Daniel Frischmann scored the 1:0 for the Penguins on their second power play (at 10.). Just under a minute and a half later, Nico Burkhart made it 2:0 (at 11.). Just under four minutes before the end of the period, the Tyrol side capitalised on their next power play through Fabian Nußbaumer to make it 3:0 (at 16.). Wattens added another, with Daniel Frischmann scoring his second goal to make it 4:0 before the end of the first period (at 18.).

In the second period, the Bulldogs fought their way back into the game: Manuel Merk cut the deficit to 1:4 on the power play (25nd minute). A minute and a half later, Lustenau loanee Maid Meduseljac made it 2:4 (26th minute). After Vorarlberg’s quick double, there were no further goals for some time, before Patrick Huber scored 5:2 for Wattens shortly before the end of the period (39th minute). Dornbirn refused to give up and closed the gap to 3:5 through Sebastian Koberger on the power play in the final period (48th minute). New signing Mikus Mintautiskis delighted the Wattens fans with the late 6:3 (59th minute), as the Penguins secured their first three points.

Eastern Division:

Wiener Eislauf-Verein overcome Maribor at Heumarkt

The Wiener Eislauf-Verein met on Saturday in the Division East, after two indoor games at the Steffl Arena 3, now for the first time in the atmospheric open-air arena at Heumarkt in front of the Wiener Konzerthaus, against the HDK Maribor. After a scoreless first period, in which emotions only flared up for the first time towards the end, the match remained a highly exciting affair in the second period. Both teams failed to convert a power-play opportunity. 30 seconds before the second buzzer, Daniel Aschauer delighted the WEV fans by scoring the late 1:0 (40.).  

The Slovenians hit back early in the final period: Nejc Bizjak levelled the score at 1:1 (45nd minute). It was crunch time in front of the Konzerthaus: the Viennese forced the lead, with Theodor Fichtinger scoring for 2:1 (56th minute). In the end, the Foxes pulled netminder Jaka Gajšek during a power play, but WEV saw out the narrow victory and celebrated an important three-point win in the first outdoor game of the new season.

Sharks Gmunden turn game around against ATSE at the last minute

Champions UEHV CAM4DENT Sharks Gmunden trailed ATSE Graz after Maximilian Schwarz’s goal in the 10th minute, they trailed 0:1 for a long time. It was only 32 seconds before the end that André Flatscher sent the Upper Austrians into overtime. There, Elias Koller scored the winning goal for 2:1 in the 64th minute.

KSV Kängurus vs. UEHV CAM4DENT Sharks Gmunden cancelled

The big clash between KSV Kängurus and the Sharks Gmunden had to be cancelled due to a defect in the refrigeration system. A new date will follow. Sunday's game between Kapfenberg and WEV was also cancelled.

Ö Eishockey Liga format 2025/2026

The Ö Eishockey Liga began the new season with its first matchday on 4 October 2025. In its fifth year, the format in the two divisions – West with six teams and East with five teams – will undergo a change in phase 1. In the East Division, the coming season will feature two and a half home-and-away rounds, resulting in 20 games per team. In the West Division, as in the previous season, two home-and-away rounds will be played, likewise resulting in 20 games per team.

After phase 1, an inter-regional play-off will once again take place, beginning with the quarter-finals on 07 February 2026. The coming season will again feature a play-off pick after the regular season to provide additional excitement. The highest-placed team in each of the West and East Divisions may choose its quarter-final opponent from the team placed third or fourth in the other division. From the quarter-finals through the semi-finals to the final, the play-off match-ups will be decided in best-of-three series (H/A/H) from the coming season onwards.
