After the 2:1 away win in Finland, Salzburg made a dream start in front of their home crowd on Wednesday. Troy Bourke scored the opener while short-handed, winning the puck himself before finishing clinically.
The Red Bulls had the better of the game for long spells and remained the dominant side at five-on-five in the middle period. With 30 minutes played, Lucas Thaler made it 2:0. Things briefly became dangerous for the win2day ICE Hockey League champions during a 3-on-5 penalty kill, but Salzburg also came through that situation unscathed.
Shortly after the start of the third period, Philipp Krening sealed the result, before Mario Huber made it 4:0 with a superb goal. Peter Schneider completed the scoring by converting a rebound while short-handed. In the quarter-finals, the Red Bulls will face Swedish representatives Färjestad Karlstad.
CHL play-off format
The top 16 teams from the 24-team field contest the round of sixteen. 1st plays 16th, 2nd plays 15th, and so on. This then determines the play-off bracket through to the final. The play-off ties are decided over two legs, with the total number of goals scored on aggregate decisive if the points are level. Only the final is played as a winner-takes-all match.
