Sabres St. Pölten and KSV High­landers usher in a new era in the win2day AWHL

The newly founded win2day AWHL celebrates a historic moment with the meeting between Sabres St. Pölten and KSV Highlanders. The Sabres, reigning runners-up in the Austrian championship, go into the game as favourites. The Highlanders, meanwhile, finished last season in fourth place after losing the third-place play-off to Lakers Kärnten.

With this game, both teams not only contest the first AWHL game in history, but also begin the new EWHL season at the same time, as games between Austrian teams count towards both competitions.

The format of the new league offers excitement right to the finish. In the first phase of the AWHL, the five teams play each other home and away, with the results also counting towards the EWHL. This is followed by a second phase comprising placement and qualification rounds, ultimately culminating in the AWHL Final Four, where the season’s champion will be crowned. This new format promises an exciting season with many high-quality match-ups.

Intense weekend in the EWHL

Alongside the AWHL premiere, several EWHL fixtures will also be played this weekend. On Friday, Lakers Kärnten host Slovak representatives HK PSRZ Bratislava. While Bratislava have won their EWHL games so far, the Lakers are beginning their new season. On Saturday, DEC Salzburg Eagles face Aisulu Almaty, who have already played four games but are still waiting for their first win. Tauron Metropolia Silesia and MAC Budapest will also meet in an exciting clash.

Sunday features no fewer than three EWHL games. MAC Budapest and Tauron Metropolia Silesia play the return fixture, KSV Highlanders face Aisulu Almaty following their AWHL debut on Friday, while Sabres St. Pölten play another EWHL game against Budapest Jegkorong Akademia after their historic AWHL opener on Friday.
