Sabres cele­brate emphatic win to open win2day AWHL inter­me­diate round

The Sabres St. Pölten opened the placement round of the win2day Austrian Women’s Hockey League on Saturday with an emphatic 6:0 victory away to the Lakers Kärnten. Lena Artner, Lena Dauböck and Tamina Schall each scored twice for the dominant Lower Austrians. In the European Women’s Hockey League, MAC Budapest celebrated a spectacular home win against EVB Eagles South Tyrol. The Hungarians turned the game in their favour with two goals in the final minute to win 5:4.

The placement round will determine the seeding from which the three teams already qualified for the Final 4 will enter the Final 4. The Sabres St. Pölten made a perfect start with their emphatic win in Klagenfurt. Although the visitors were dominant from the outset, it took until the 18th minute for Lena Artner to open the scoring on the power play.


Early in the middle period, Lena Dauböck made it 2:0, and the score remained unchanged until the final period. There, the Lower Austrians made their superiority count and secured a 6:0 win. Lena Artner, Lena Dauböck and Tamina Schall each registered two goals.

The intermediate round continues on Sunday, with the Lakers hosting the KSV Highlanders in their second placement-round game. In the Qualification Round, three teams will compete for the final remaining place in the Final 4 of the Austrian Women’s Hockey League. The Villach Lady Hawks will make their debut in Austria’s top women’s league. The Lady Hawks host the Graz99ers Huskies on Sunday.


European Women’s Hockey League

In the European Women’s Hockey League, MAC Budapest and EVB Eagles South Tyrol engaged in an end-to-end contest in which the lead changed hands several times. In the final period, the South Tyroleans took the lead through two goals from Kristin Della Rovere, but MAC turned the game in their favour in the final minute. Following Alexandra Huszak’s equaliser (59.02), Olivia Atkinson (59.26) sealed the home win. The Hungarians, now in fourth place, also moved ahead of the Eagles in the EWHL standings. On Sunday, the team from Bolzano faces Budapest’s second team, Budapest Jegkorong Akademia.
