Sabres and Eagles open the win2day Austrian Women’s Hockey League with victories
The new win2day Austrian Women’s Hockey League season got under way on Saturday with two exciting matches. Defending champions Sabres St. Pölten opened their campaign with a 4:2 away win over Lakers Kärnten. The Salzburg Eagles also enjoyed a successful start, beating league newcomers Villach Lady Hawks 6:4 in a high-scoring game. In the European Women’s Hockey League, Budapest Jegkorong Akademia, HK PSRZ Bratislava and EVB Eagles South Tyrol also celebrated victories.

Lakers Kärnten and Sabres St. Pölten contested the official AWHL season opener. Petra Soldic gave the home side the lead on the power play, but the reigning champions turned the game around with three goals in the middle period. Selena Pugh scored the decisive goal in the 46th minute, with the Lakers only able to reduce the deficit to 2:4.
In the second game of the day, the Salzburg Eagles beat the Villach Lady Hawks 6:4. Gabrielle Davidson was the match-winner, contributing two goals and an assist to the victory. Despite the defeat, the Carinthian league newcomers demonstrated their potential.
European Women'S League
The European Women’s Hockey League also featured thrilling match-ups on Saturday. HK PSRZ Bratislava claimed a narrow 3:2 home win over the KSV Highlanders. The Slovak side had established a 3:0 lead in the opening period before the Styrian side closed the gap in the final period. However, they were unable to find an equaliser, allowing Bratislava to record their first win after their opening defeat.
EVB Eagles South Tyrol set the tone from the outset against Graz99ers Huskies. The Bolzano side took the lead after just 54 seconds and eventually secured a convincing 3:0 victory. Goaltender Alice Philbert recorded a shutout. In the Hungarian derby between Budapest Jegkorong Akademia and MAC Budapest, the home side showed great composure. After falling behind early, they turned the game around and ultimately prevailed 2:1.
