Sabres and Bratislava take the lead in the Euro­pean Women’s Hockey League quarter-finals

Sabres St. Pölten, the slightly lower-seeded side, began their quarter-final first leg against MAC Budapest with a home win. The hosts initially took the lead in the opening period before MAC turned the game around by the 24th minute to make it 2:1 from their perspective. Emma McKnight levelled at 2:2 with her second goal of the evening in the middle period. Lena Dauböck then scored the game-winning goal with less than three minutes remaining. The Sabres therefore take a one-goal lead into Sunday’s second leg in Budapest.

Budapest’s other team, Budapest Jegkorong Akadémia, also suffered defeat in their quarter-final opener. They were comprehensively beaten 1:5 by regular-season champions HK PSRZ Bratislava. Despite Bratislava holding a clear advantage in chances, Budapest put up a good fight in the first period and ended it at 1:1. The visitors then stepped up a gear in the middle period, scoring three times in five minutes to make it 4:1. Erna Tothorva ultimately set the final score at 5:1 in the final period.

The quarter-final ties will be decided in the Champions Hockey League (CHL) format, with a first and second leg. The aggregate score from the two matches played will be used. The team leading on aggregate after the first and second legs will advance to the semi-finals.

Should the aggregate score be level at the final buzzer after 120 minutes, the decision will be made in a ten-minute three-on-three overtime period and, if necessary, a penalty shootout with five shooters each. This means there is no overtime in the first leg. Each first leg ends after 60 minutes either in a draw or with a win in regulation time.
