Roster announced for Deutsch­land Cup

“For this high-calibre tournament, I will field the best possible team. It is a mix of players who were already in the World Championship roster, as well as candidates who can put themselves forward for future assignments,” summarises Roger Bader his roster.

Alongside experienced players such as Bernhard Starkbaum, Dominique Heinrich, Bernd Wolf, Lukas Haudum and others, the roster also includes NHL first-round pick Marco Kasper (8th overall, Detroit Red Wings), as well as the promising young David Reinbacher, who is under contract with EHC Kloten in Switzerland.

“He has earned this opportunity to show his talent within the national team set-up,” said Bader of Reinbacher, who recently turned 18. In general, the head coach is known for giving young talents the opportunity to showcase themselves and put themselves forward for further assignments.

Further developing their own game

As is customary during the November international break, the head coach has three training sessions available before the first international fixture, Roger Bader: “Fundamentally, it is about continuing to develop our style of play and applying it against three good opponents.”

Apart from David Reinbacher, there are no debutants in the roster. This means that any potential settling into the system will be quickly taken care of, as the Swiss coach explains: “The players know my game. It is therefore not an issue.”

What certainly is an issue is having been invited to this tournament, which is always packed with top teams. “This is proof of, and the reward for, our performances over recent years. Initial discussions about taking part took place before the World Championship. With our performance in the final warm-up game against Germany in Schwenningen before the World Championship and our results at the World Championship itself, we did more than merely put ourselves forward. In Slovakia, Germany and Denmark, we will face the teams ranked eighth, ninth and tenth in the world rankings. These are enormously valuable top-level games for us,” explains Roger Bader.

Austria open the international competition on Thursday, 10 November at 16:15, against Slovakia, who are taking part in the Deutschland Cup for the 23rd time. The traditional clash with Germany takes place on Saturday at 18:00, while the final game against Denmark starts as early as 11:00 on Sunday.
