Revenge achieved! Austria beat Germany after a penalty shootout

"Above all, I am very pleased with today's performance and, of course, happy about the win. I am particularly happy because it was deserved,"Head Coach Roger Badersaid after the game, highlighting plenty of positives overall. 

These included the penalty killing and the team's own power play. Both the 1:0 in the seventh minute through Lukas Haudum and the 2:1 in the 29th minute through Henrik Neubauer came on the power play. Neubauer recorded his first goal for the national team and will take the game puck home. 

In a generally very fast and physical game, the hosts equalised on both occasions. For the 1:1, Erik Kirchschläger had the puck under control, turned back once more and was knocked to the ice by the forechecking onrushing opponent. 

Two German players were left alone in front of Bernhard Starkbaum's goal, and Maximilian Kammerer took advantage of the situation to equalise.

At the end of the second period and the start of the third, Austria had to survive almost two minutes two men short and, as mentioned, were strong on the penalty kill. A lapse in concentration shortly after Austria returned to full strength eventually led to the 2:2. 

Both goaltenders were in the spotlight several times in the closing stages, denying several chances for what appeared to be the winning goal. Bernhard Starkbaum stood out in particular, playing a major part in ensuring Austria did not concede while shorthanded. 

There was still no decision in the five-minute overtime period, with the penalty shootout required to determine the winner. Austria's first three shooters all scored – Lukas Haudum, Henrik Neubauer and Dominic Zwerger – while Starkbaum was unbeatable at the other end.

Lukas Haudum: "A win against Germany feels very, very good, especially after the first game, in which we were a little asleep in the first period but then played well. Our performance today was certainly better and we showed that when we skate and keep the game simple, we can do more than merely compete. The whole team showed great fighting spirit. We had to survive a few minutes shorthanded, but did that well and had a reliable backstop in Bernhard Starkbaum in goal."

Bernhard Starkbaum, Man of the Match: "I think it was quite okay after two or three weeks away from the ice. I think we are on the right track, but we need to continue working hard and still have a few steps to take in order to be successful in Finland. We can be really satisfied with the performance. In the penalty shootout, I really just focused on the puck and let the player make the first move before reacting to it. Fortunately, that worked well today."

Head Coach Roger Bader will make the next selection decisions for the upcoming Team Camp overnight, and the players are clearly making it difficult for him: "Overall, I am pleased with the week. We worked well, even though we were unable to train on the first day because the ice was damaged. There will not be that many new players joining us yet. From Salzburg, I will only call up the younger players; those who had plenty of ice time will only join in week five. Oliver Achermann, David Reinbacher and Thimo Nickl will now join us. There will be another five or six changes, but that is Part of the Game and I hope the players make it difficult for me."
