EC Red Bull Salzburg made a perfect start in their home game against Berlin: Connor Corcoran put the hosts ahead on the power play as early as the fourth minute. Salzburg remained on the front foot but were unable to convert their dominance into further goals before the first break – it remained 1:0.
Just 82 seconds after the restart, the Red Bulls had cause to celebrate again: Nash Nienhuis made it 2:0 after excellent build-up play from Coe. Berlin pulled one back shortly afterwards, but Mario Huber restored the two-goal lead in the 31st minute after a perfect pass from Baltram.
Peter Schneider eventually increased the lead to 4:1. Salzburg then defended their advantage intelligently and were able to rely on goaltender Atte Tolvanen in crucial situations. With this victory, Head Coach Manny Viveiros' team finished the CHL regular season in eleventh place – Ingolstadt now await in the round of sixteen.
KAC out after defeat in Kuopio
KalPa made a strong start against an EC-KAC side still severely depleted by absences, taking a 2:0 lead early on through goals from Joona Saarelainen in the 6th minute and Juuso Könönen in the 9th minute. The visitors then grew into the game and created good chances through Clemens Unterweger and David Waschnig, but were denied by impressive KalPa goaltender Patrik Kerkola.
The game was more evenly balanced in the second period. Klagenfurt created several opportunities but were unable to take them. Their first power play also brought no reward. In the final period, Lukáš Kaňák made it 3:0 for the Finns in the 48th minute. KAC did get a consolation goal through Thomas Hundertpfund in the 57th minute, but no more was possible. The Red Jackets therefore miss out on the CHL round of sixteen.
